A breakdown of the NEET UG exam pattern, subject-wise weightage, and how to read cutoff trends before counselling.

Exam Pattern at a Glance

NEET UG is a 200-question (180 to be attempted), pen-and-paper multiple-choice test covering Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany + Zoology), each correct answer worth 4 marks with a 1 mark penalty for incorrect answers.

Subject-wise Weightage (Approximate)

  • Biology (Botany + Zoology): ~50% of total marks — the single most important section
  • Chemistry: ~25%, split roughly evenly between Physical, Organic and Inorganic
  • Physics: ~25%, generally considered the most time-consuming section per question

Understanding Cutoff Trends

NEET UG cutoffs (qualifying marks/percentile) and the actual rank required for a specific college vary every year based on difficulty level, number of candidates, and seat availability. A rank that secured a government seat last year may not do the same this year — always check the latest official cutoff data during counselling rather than relying on old figures.

How to Use Cutoff Data Sensibly

  1. Look at cutoff trends over the last 2–3 years, not just one year, to spot a realistic range
  2. Separate All-India Quota cutoffs from your specific state's quota cutoffs — they can differ significantly
  3. Keep a realistic shortlist of government, deemed, private and abroad options rather than fixating on one college

Final Tips

Don't let last year's cutoff numbers create false confidence or unnecessary panic — they're a guide, not a guarantee. Once your actual NEET UG result is out, our counsellors can help you map your rank to realistic, current options across India and abroad.
